We are Portamento, an impassioned mentorship team based in the heart of Birmingham, UK dedicated to the teaching of modern music technology, through our accessible, tried-and-tested, and adaptive training program.

Meet Martin
Founder and Lead Mentor
Leading the team is Martin Knowles, who brings two decades of international music industry experience to his work. Having run successful artist and label projects whilst touring across more than 30 countries, Martin possesses a deep, first-hand understanding of both the creative and commercial sides of the business.Â

Driven by a passion for music and human connection, he has since dedicated his career to personal mentorship. To date, he has guided dozens of students through tailored one-to-one programs, collaborating with Midlands charities, schools and social care authorities to mentor disadvantaged, vulnerable and at-risk youth.

While not always the case, we have found that standard academic systems are often insufficient for young people facing complex life challenges. With our compassionate and supportive team, we take behavioural and educational hurdles and turn them into completed creative projects and recognised qualifications.
